How Footy Eye works

Footy Eye is a free football (soccer) decision game. Each play is a match situation drawn on a tactics board; you choose the best of four reads, and the reasoning is shown after every answer. This page explains how the plays are made, how the score works, and what it does and doesn't measure.

How the plays are made

  • Every play is written by hand as a situation on a 2D tactics board: the players, the ball and how they move in the seconds before the decision.
  • Each has one best answer and three alternatives, graded from good to poor, with the reason the best one is best and what each other option would lead to.
  • Each is tagged with its category, the tactical problem the best answer solves, the patterns it turns on and the moment of the game, which is how Training and the tactics pages group them.
  • Plays are checked against a written authoring brief and an automated validator before they go live. Plays for younger formats (7v7 and 9v9) are reviewed by coaches before they are served.

Tactics explained

How the Test is scored

  1. Each Test draws 10 plays at random from a pool of 160, 2 from each of the 5 categories.
  2. Each play animates with the question on screen; then you have 20 seconds to choose.
  3. You start at 100. A right answer within 10 seconds adds 4, a slower right answer adds 3, a wrong answer takes off 2, and running out of time takes off 4. The score stays between 60 and 140.
  4. The score is computed on the server from your answers, so a posted score can't be edited.
  5. Your level comes from your score, and your archetype from the categories you read best.

What it measures

How well you read short match situations: whether you recognise the picture and choose the decision that gives your team the best chance, and how quickly. A higher score means more good reads, faster.

What it doesn't measure

  • Technique, fitness or anything you do with the ball in a real game.
  • Decisions under the real pressure of a match, or the scanning you do in three dimensions.
  • General intelligence: the Football IQ is a game score, not a psychometric IQ test.
  • How you compare with other players: the levels describe the score itself. The scale has not been validated against match performance.
